“We are so proud of having co-founded Miami Book Fair nearly 40 years ago, recognizing the valuable connection between cultural programs and student success,” said MDC President Madeline Pumariega. “This designation signals to the world that Miami is a place where intellectual curiosity and the open exchange of ideas is part of the fabric of our lives, and the foundation of education and entrepreneurship.”
The new legislation – which was sponsored by District 5 Commissioner Eileen Higgins and unanimously supported by the entire commission – also recognized Miami Book Fair, Miami-Dade Public Library System, and Books & Books for their integral contributions to the area’s literary cultural life.
“Reading has always been a way to learn about the ages before us, connect with the times we live in, and explore what the future may hold,” said Higgins. “Miami Book Month reminds us of the power of the pen to transport and inspire, and I’m so thankful for the work done by Miami Dade College and all Miami Book Fair contributors.”
